The Gillespie County Sheriff ’s Office responded to 428 calls for service during the week of May 18-24. Deputies conducted 244 traffic stops, issued 157 warnings and 25 citations. They responded to 12 traffic accidents, including two major and 10 minor crashes.
Eight arrests were made during the week, and as of Monday, May 24, there were 71 people in the Gillespie County Jail.
Disturbance
On Tuesday, May 19 at 6:07 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Deerview Drive for a reported disturbance. A victim reported that Fredericksburg resident Virgilio Anibal Barrios-Urizar, 27, grabbed her by her hair and threw her on the ground. The victim was 14 weeks pregnant and both her and Barrios- Urizar were aware of the pregnancy. Barrios- Urizar was placed under arrest for Assault of a Pregnant Person. Because Barrios-Urizar has a previous assault conviction for family violence, the charge “Assault Family Violence w/ Previous Conviction” will be sent to the district attorney for review. An application for an emergency protective order was completed.
Drugs – Alcohol
On Monday, May 18 at 11:26 p.m., a deputy stopped a speeding vehicle on U.S. 290 East near Arch Ray loop. The driver showed signs of intoxication. The deputy administered a sobriety test and a breathalyzer, which revealed that the driver had blood alcohol content of 0.162 and 0.151. 26 year-old Fredericksburg resident Mathew Dean Weigand was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC above 0.15.
Other
On Monday, May 18 at 10:39 p.m. a deputy stopped a vehicle in the 400 block of South Milam Street for expired registration. The driver, 31-year-old Dylan Kinnibrugh of Fredericksburg was found to have a suspended license and at least two prior convictions for Driving While License Invalid (DWLI). He was arrested for DWLI- Enhanced.
On Tuesday, May 19 at 8:03 a.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle in the 13000 block of U.S. 290 East. A division of Homeland Security determined that the vehicle’s five occupants were in the country without proper documentation. The subjects are as follows: Kember Morales, age 21, Americo Morales, age 40, Donis Reyes Eswin Saul, age 27, Luis Julian Medina, age 29 and Ricardo Mata Morales, age 31. Lawful detainers were issued and all subjects were released to a Division of Homeland Security.
On Tuesday, May 19 at 8:06 a.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle on the 2900 block of Knopp School Road. A Division of Homeland Security confirmed the driver, Rene Ivan Rodriguez Vargas, age 38, was in the country without proper documentation. A lawful detainer was issued, and Vargas was released to a Division of Homeland Security.
On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 06:53 a.m., a deputy pulled over a vehicle for equipment violation. The passenger, Oscar Hernandez Cruz, 26, was detained and the Department of Homeland Security was notified. Cruz was released to a Division of Homeland Security.
On Friday, May 22 at 7:37 a.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle for no insurance. Border Patrol had been looking for the vehicle because it was tied to human smuggling. The deputy spoke with the driver, who was the registered owner of the vehicle, and three passengers. A Division of Homeland Security was contacted, and the subjects were detained. The driver, Denis Jonax Escalante De Dios, 39 and Passengers: Enis Gomez Martinez, 34, Jairo Bajurto Vasquez, 16 and Wilder Aguilar Urbina, 29, were released to a Division of Homeland Security.
On May 22 at 9:24 a.m., a deputy conducted a warrant service on Whispering Oaks Drive for Fredericksburg resident Joe Rivas, 59. Rivas was confirmed to have a warrant for Pardon and Parole violation and was transported to the jail without incident.
On Friday, May 22 at 10:21 p.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle at U.S. 290 West and U.S. 87 North. The driver, identified as Pedro Miguel Duran Jr., 20, of El Paso, was found to have an active warrant out of El Paso County for Driving While Intoxicated and was arrested.
