Hospital to offer teen heart screenings

Methodist Hospital | Hill Country is partnering with August Heart San Antonio and Austin Heart of Fredericksburg to provide heart screenings for teens on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the hospital, 1020 South State Highway 16.

The community screenings are open to teenagers, 13-18 years old, and take about 20 minutes. Appointments are available from 4-6:30 p.m. and those under 18 must have a parent or guardian present.

“These screenings are part of our hospital’s focus on cardiology services,” Dr. Noah Greene, chief-of-staff, said. “Our expanded cardiology care is an important component of the quality healthcare we provide for the citizens of the Hill Country.”

Heart conditions covered in the screening include hypertophic cardiomyopa-thy, dilated cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

August Heart was founded by Dore and Bart Koontz in memory of their son, August, whose death was the result of a sudden cardiac arrest.

For more information on the August Heart Foundation and the event, visit augustheart.org or call 210267-2771.

Following the screenings, participants will have the opportunity to learn handsonly CPR.

Last fall, the hospital added an image-guided therapy system to their cardiac catheterization lab. The system allows hospital staff to perform a range of routine and complex procedures with optimal lab performance that results in improved care.

The hospital has also seen growth in patients’ needs for electrophysiology, the study of the heart’s electrical activity and an indicator of abnormal heart rhythms. The hospital offers pacemakers and other heart-related devices to address these needs.

Methodist Hospital | Hill Country is partnering with various physicians and clinics to offer these services.

“We see a large number of patients with cardiac issues that we now can care for in Fredericksburg instead of sending them outside our community,” Emily Mochan, Chief Operating Officer, said.

“Now our patients can continue to be treated close to home with the most modern imaging system in the Hill Country that provides batter clinical outcomes, improved patient experience, improved staff experience and lower costs of care.”

Methodist Hospital | Hill Country is an 86-bed hospital with a range of medical services, including emergency care, cardiology, gastroenterology and orthopedics. To learn more, visit SAHealth.com/HillCountry.
