Quick-draw tiny sketch demo slated for Jan. 14

Mary Kaye Sawyer-Morse will demonstrate techniques of “Pocket Sketching” at the January meeting of the Guadalupe Watercolor Group (GWG) next Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 1-3 p.m.

Meetings are free, open to the public and held five times a year at the Kerr Arts and Culture Center.

“Pocket Sketching is a quick-draw approach to capturing what you see in just a few minutes, using a water-soluble pen, a 4×6 inch sketch pad and a small watercolor set,” said Sawyer-Morse. “It’s ideal for the timid beginner to the advanced artist. Equipment is minimal, it’s small and totally portable and there’s no clean up!”

“Mary Kaye brings enthusiasm and expertise to a fun technique that’s perfect for taking along while hiking, biking or just sitting in a café,” said GWG president Marsha Pape, a Fredericksburg watercolor artist.

Sawyer-Morse began painting with pastels at an early age and received her first commission at 16 years of age. Her formal training includes an associate of arts degree as an art major, and she has studied with several prominent pastel masters, including Albert Handell, Clive Tyler, Theresa Saia and Tobi Clement. Her works have been shown in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and various venues throughout the Texas Hill Country. A proponent of landscapes, she says her paintings are known for an expressive use of radiant, rich color.

“In 2017, I came across Kath Macaulay’s workshop at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, and I fell in love with sketching on the go,” Sawyer-Morse said. “I completed my certification as a Pocket Sketching instructor in 2022, and I am having a ball teaching others so they can play for a lifetime!”

In addition to the GWG demo on Tuesday, Sawyer- Morse will be teaching two separate landscape classes at KACC on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Registration is limited, but any inquiries about availability can be directed to GWG secretary Deborah Jascur at jmjdaj@ gmail.com.

GWG was founded in 1993 to share ideas and creative experiences in watermedia in the Hill Country through educational and inspiring programs featuring accomplished artists and teachers, far and wide. The group holds an annual juried exhibit each spring.

“I know Mary Kaye will inspire everyone with her skill and enthusiasm,” Pape said. “I’m confident she’ll motivate us to get out there and get sketching.”

GWG meetings are held the second Tuesday of September, November, January, March and May in the basement of KACC, which is located at 228 Earl Garrett St.
