JANUARY 8, 1975

The first baby born to Gillespie County parents in the new year at Hill Country Memorial Hospital arrived Jan. 1 when Jimmy Cantu was born at 7:20 p.m. to Mr. and Mrs. Liandro Arizola Cantu of Luckenbach.

The Gillespie County Fair Grounds will come alive once again Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11, for the 43rd annual Gillespie County 4-H and FFA Livestock Show and Auction. A total of 764 entries will be shown in 10 categories.

New County of Gillespie officials were sworn in during ceremonies held Thursday morning, Jan. 2, at the Gillespie County Courthouse.

The 55 mph speed limit, enacted last year as an energy-saving measure, became permanent on Jan. 2.

Harper ushered in the stock show last weekend with the Harper FFA and 4-H Stock Show. Top winners included Ellen Eckert, Doss 4-H, champion steer; Kenny Bode, Harper 4-H, Angora; Kevin McMahon, Harper FFA, market lamb; Melanie McMahon, Harper 4-H, breeding sheep; Leon Dunn, Harper FFA, market hog, and Ruth Arlitt, Harper 4-H, broilers.

Elbert Schmidt has succeeded Dean Hopf as superintendent of the Harper Independent School District, effective Jan. 1. Schmidt has been high school principal since 1970.

Beginning Feb. 1, the majority of motor vehicles operating in Texas will be eligible to use a new multi-year license plate, renewable for five years. Next year, those vehicle owners will buy a 1×2-inch adhesive-type validation tag with the current year on it, to place in the upper left hand corner over the previous year.

Janine Gail Stroeher and Benno William Engel Jr. exchanged nuptial vows Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church.

In addition to the New Year baby, one other birth was reported from Hill Country Memorial Hospital this week as a girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lucio Lopez, Blanco, Jan. 5.

Howard Burrier has announced the sale of his store in Willow City to Mrs. Marvin (Fannie) Stech. Mrs. Stech is also Willow City postmaster.
