Reunion with a submarine
Just after midnight, Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki’s 78-foot mini-submarine detached from its mothership, a larger submarine called I-24. Despite instrument trouble, Ensign Sakamaki set a course for the entrance to the harbor, 10 miles away. The commander of I-24 noted the date — Dec. 7, 1941.
