Giving tortoises a hand

With Global Leadership Adventures (GLA), local teen Willa Heep participated in a two-week animal and wildlife conservation program on the Galápagos islands.

She and 14 other teens worked at two tortoise refuge centers, helping efforts to preserve and restore the habitats of native island-dwelling wildlife.

“At first, I was a little bit scared,” she said. “I’ve never flown on my own or traveled on my own. And I’ve never traveled out of the country. It looked fun, so I decided to try it....
