Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site will host two special events to celebrate the history of the Texas-German Dialect on Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24.
This dialect not only tells the story of how Germans adapted to Texas but also the cultural traditions they developed.
The Texas-German Dialect Project from the University of Texas at Austin will share how they are preserving the Texas-German dialect at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at the LBJ State Park Visitor Center.
Between the presentations at the Visitor Center, representatives from the project will be at the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm to answer questions regarding their work.
The LBJ State Park Visitor Center will also host the Hill Country premiere of “All Güt Things: The Texas German Story” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 24.
Over several years in development, including many interviews in the Hill Country, this documentary explores the past, present and future of the Texas-German dialect through the stories of those who grew up speaking it.
The Visitor Center and park facilities are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with trails remaining open until 10 p.m. The Sauer-Beckmann Farm is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Park staff recommend visitors come to the Visitor Complex first to get all the park daily event details, map, and free day park permit.
