Two Fredericksburg youth girls’ basketball teams made their first trip to the All American Sports National Basketball Tournament in San Antonio July 8-10 and results were in their favor.

    Fredericksburg Pride Fourth Grade Team

The Fredericksburg Pride’s fourth grade girls finished runner-up among 12 teams.

The team only lost to one team from San Antonio, Team United. Team United defeated the Pride, 24-15, in pool play and then, 26-11, in the tournament championship game on July 10 at the AT&T Center, on the court home to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Pride defeated the Katy Rebels, 38-8; ASA T-IX, 33-11; Team Texas Dynasty, 45-27, and the Lady Razorbacks Elite, 28-22, en route to the championship game.

“Our girls had the experience of a lifetime in a tournament of this magnitude, and they represented our community extremely well,” said Coach Garet von Netzer.

Fourth grade team members were Lauren Danz, Taylor Grona, Rilyn Grona, Jordan Zenner, Madison Frantzen, Madison McKinnon, Paige Kuhlmann, Charli Olfers, Ryann Gallagher, Auroa Araiza and Kirsten Hartmann.

    Fredericksburg Pride Sixth Grade Team

The Fredericksburg Pride sixth grade team opened tournament play July 8 by losing their first game to the eventual fourth place AS Hoops Elite 2002, 29-28.

The team lost, 47-45, in overtime to Sierra Madre from Monterey, Mexico.

They then beat the Katy Rebels, 33-14, and the CEN-TEX Elite Soldiers, 33-30. Following, they lost, 38-35, to HTX Fire, 2022.

With the loss, Pride dropped into the sixth place game where they came from a 10-point deficit in the second half to win.

Members of the sixth grade team are Ella Hartmann, Anabel Araiza, Zoe Maurer, Kylie Wolsey, Chloe Palmer, Misty Danz, Sterlin Richardson, Abbey Ybarra, Madison McKinnon, Lauren Danz and Aurora Arziza.

    Coach’s Remarks

“To last 12 games in a tournament that attracted outstanding teams from several states and even Mexico was impressive,” said Von Netzer of both teams. “Even more impressive is that every team we played was an all-star team, while our two teams are composed of girls from our community.”

“We have come a long way from where we started,” continued Von Netzer. “Our girls played with a lot of heart and determination against truly the best teams out there. We may have gotten outscored here and there but our girls didn’t get outhustled.”
