Fredericksburg High School team tennis defended its state title by beating the Vernon Lions, 10-7, in the UIL Class 4A State Team Tennis Tournament on Thursday in College Station.
FHS dispatched Vernon in a tense state championship round to match last year’s golden effort.
“Any state medal is a good medal,” coach Randall King said. “They are so hard to achieve. We are very proud of this team for all the work put in to win this medal.”
The Billies opened tournament play by defeating Center, 10-4, during the semifinals.
FHS won four of seven doubles matches to carry a slim lead into singles play.
Both teams stayed closed during singles play.
King said singles play improved throughout the season.
“Once we had the lead coming out of doubles, we knew we just needed to win 50 percent of the remaining singles matches,” King said. “Our depth really makes that possible.”
Vernon led at one point, only for FHS to retake the lead after wins by Avery Stephens, Jorge Lopez, Jarris Hawkins and Noah DeLeon.
Freshman Bella Rodriguez beat Caroline Rule, 6-4, 6-2, to win FHS’ ninth point with both David Lindsay and Thomas Wainwright playing tiebreakers in their matches.
Lindsay ended up as the decisive point, beating Broc Kieschnick, 6-3, 4-6, (10-4), to win his match and hand FHS a third team tennis championship.
“David has been very consistent all season,” King said. “We know that someone on the team would step up, you just never know where it will come from. That is what is so cool about team tennis. Any given day, it will be a different player or doubles combination that makes the difference.”
Seniors Blake Boubel, Noah DeLeon, Jarris Hawkins, Avery Stephens, Jaci Spies, Amy Dittmar and Emilia Smajstrla end their team tennis careers with two state titles and a runner-up finish in 2017.
“Each group of seniors brings different things to the table, but I think what they have in common with all the others is family,” King said. “They have all built a bond with each other and the rest of the team that creates the work ethic and capacity to win for each other. The positive, is that all this gets passed on to the younger players, and they strive to follow in the footsteps and keep the tradition alive.”
Juniors Thomas Wainwright and Karina Gonzalez, and sophomores David Lindsay and Olivia Alvarez played for 2018’s state champions.
