FHS girls' hoops ends playoff run in regional quarterfinals

The Fredericksburg High School girls’ varsity basketball team saw their season come to an end after being defeated by Wharton, 53-45, in regional quarter finals.

The Billies finished their season with a 29-7 overall record and went undefeated in District 28-4A.

Tuesday, Feb. 21 the team faced Wharton, after defeating Wimberley and Freeport Brazosport.

Before taking on Wharton, head coach Carrie Grona was confident in her team’s abilities, but the team struggled in the first quarter.

“We had a bad first quarter but won every other quarter,” Grona said. “We lost with free-throws at the end of the game and only had Abby (Spurgin) at 50 percent.”

The team then was able to reduce the lead to three in the third by controlling the boards with help from Hannah Wilson on the inside.

With 2:30 left in the game, Wharton started to hold the ball and run the clock, forcing the Billies to start fouling.

Wilson led the team with 16 points, followed by Abby Spurgin 13 points.

Spurgin and senior Jessie Jarreau led the team with three assists a piece. Sophomore Mia Torres had two steals.
