Class 6A schools provided strong competition for the Fredericksburg High School girls’ varsity basketball team. The 4A Billies went 3-2 over the weekend at the San Marcos Champions Classic Tournament. The team beat South San Antonio, Concordia Lutheran and San Marcos High School. The team lost to San Antonio Edison and College Station. “Fifth game legs got us but we will be ready to get back to work next week,” head coach Carrie Grona said over Twitter. FHS junior Brittley Bowers was named to the alltournament team, tallying 60 points, 19 rebounds, 15 steals and eight assists in five games. “This entire team I am really proud of,” Grona said. “We played all 6A schools and one big TAPPS school. How we moved the ball on offense, how we read the defenses, we did well. We should have won Saturday but we were tired. This weekend was a huge team effort.” Earlier in the week, FHS beat Burnet, the defending Region IV-4A champs, 68-43. Looking ahead, the Billies hosted Karnes City today, Tuesday, Nov. 26 in their first home game of the season. “Tomorrow we will prove how capable we are of playing at a face pace but the game itself will slow down some,” Grona said. The varsity squad will see more tournament action after the Thanksgiving holiday, traveling to the inviteonly Fantasy Lights Tournament. The team will face another tough set of 5A and 6A schools from the Dallas and Fort Worth area. “We have four tournament games against more big schools this weekend,” Grona said. “We have an arsenal to hold our own, but we have to be able to shut them down on defense.” FHS will face Fort Worth Brewer and Oklahoma North Storm in their first pool play games on Friday. Time and dates of the tournament games will be included in the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post Daily Update.
