Billies start IV-4A championship series against Bulldogs

The Billies are two wins away from ending a state tournament drought.

Fredericksburg High School baseball won its best-of-3 series against Beeville Jones in two games to advance to the Region IV-4A championship series.

All that stands in between the Billies and a trip to Disch-Falk Field, the home of the UIL Baseball State Tournament, in Austin, is a regional final series against the Sweeny Bulldogs, the region’s highest ranked team.

“Anytime you get to this point in the season, it’s exciting,” coach Derrick Dietrich said. “But we still have work to do. We still have something to prove. We are riding high on confidence, and so is Sweeny. We can’t worry about them. All we can control is what we do and how we prepare.

“They are going to put a guy on the mound and he is going to throw a ball to our hitters, and we are going to either hit it or not. And vice versa. It all comes down to want to, catching a break or two and perseverance. It should be fun.”

FHS (28-6, 11-1) beat Beeville in Game 1 on Thursday, 12-3, and Game 2 on Saturday, 12-2, to take the series.

Both games were played at San Antonio ISD Sports Complex.

“The key was that we never gave Beeville a chance to get in the games,” Dietrich said. “Our kids did a great job of keeping the hammer down and continued to hit the ball well throughout both games.”

The Billies face the Sweeny Bulldogs in a best-of-3 series for the regional championship.

Game 1 starts at 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, and is set for Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium in San Antonio.

Game 2 will be at 5 p.m. at Riverside Park in Victoria, with Game 3 following 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.

The Bulldogs stand to be FHS’ toughest postseason test this year.

“We just have to continue to do what we do,” Dietrich said. “Sweeny is good, but we have proven that we can be pretty good, also. It will, no doubt, be a dogfight. The best two teams in Region 4 remain. Now we just need to go play the games.”

Sweeny (32-4, 9-1) is the No. 5 team in Class 4A, according to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. FHS is No. 10.
