Billies girls' hoops score big at home tournament

The FHS varsity girls’ basketball team saw success over the weekend, earning second place at their own tournament.

The Billies are now ranked 11th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A poll, with a record of 14-3.

After a busy two weeks, playing 14 games, the Billies will transition back into their regular schedule before taking a short break for the holidays.

The Billies took on Pearsall Tuesday night, a game head coach Carrie Grona says is very goal oriented.

“It’s all about what goals we set as a team and we have to go in with specific things,” Grona said. “We have to focus on our block out percentage, something that is killing us in big games. That’s the thing, I don’t want them look at the scoreboard, we have to set those smaller goals.”

Grona is happy with establishing two strong players in the post and now sees this as the time to improve the play of her guards.

Hannah Wilson, Abby Spurgin and Mia Torres made the all-tournament team.

The team will then take on a tough Brownwood team on Friday, Dec. 16 and Uvalde on Monday, Dec, 19.
