Criminal charges expected in Turner Hall fire

More information to come next week as FPD, fire marshal look into case

Investigator Terry Weed on Friday said the Fredericksburg Police Department will proceed with a criminal investigation related to the fire that destroyed the historic Turner Hall on Sunday night.

After five days of investigations, Weed said they have come up with enough evidence to pursue criminal charges. He declined to elaborate until the department sends out a news release expected Tuesday morning.

“It’s an active criminal investigation, and that is all I can say until we release further information next week,” Lt. Weed said.

The state fire marshal had been on scene since Monday morning and has returned to Austin to file a report, Weed said. FPD and Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department also have been assisting with the investigation.

Social media was rampant with theories, but Weed did not address any of those in his conversation with the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post. The newspaper will release the report on its website as soon as it is available.
