Lights off for neighbors

If you own an AirBnB, VRBO, HomeAway, guest house, vacation rental or B&B in Fredericksburg and have patio lights that you leave on, could you please consider your neighbors? In my block, the guesthouse on the block behind us has patio lights that get turned on when the guests are to arrive. Apparently, some guests like lights shining into the bedroom windows. And they like them shining into mine. Last year, during the holidays, the lights were left on for 10 days. If you — AirBnB, VRBO, HomeAway, guest house, vacation rental or B&B owner — demand that patio lights be on when your guests arrive, could you build a bigger fence? Because your lights don’t stop at your property line. I could turn on the floodlight on the back of my storage building that would flood your backyard. And I don’t have to turn it off — like your guests don’t have to. Do you really want me to become a jerk? Because I will. I don’t mind. Just like you, I don’t mind how you affect me. You can’t leave a review for me. But your guests can leave a review that there is a jerk that lives behind your guesthouse.

On March 19, 1977, at 2:30 in the afternoon, a lone mud dauber flew in low over South Grape Creek, darted around for a few minutes and landed on an empty beer can. The crowd of 8,000 went wild, scaring the daylights out of the nervous little critter who immediately lit out in the direction of Cain City.

A full decade of a bad decision

Over the past decade, concerns about dark money in politics have taken a back seat to concerns about election rigging or maliciously using social media to influence outcomes. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to strive for more donor disclosure. The sad thing is that the more time passes since the 2010 Citizens United decision, the more both parties get used to taking dark money.
