Gayle Schoessnow, who is on the FISD School Board, submitted this letter written by her husband’s great grandfather B. L. Enderle in 1962 noting its relevance today. According to Schoessnow, Enderle first moved to Fredericksburg in 1912 and was the County Surveyor from 19121975. An engineer by trade, B.L. was also the founder of the Gillespie County commercial peach industry. He was friends from childhood with H. E. Butts and Chester Nimitz, and it was his relationship with Butts that was a catalyst for the commercial peach industry in Gillespie County. Despite being the county surveyor and a peach farmer, Mr. Enderle began teaching at Fredericksburg High School in 1913. For 30 years he worked at FHS teaching algebra, physics, occasionally biology, coached tennis and basketball and served two terms as the high school principal. While his letter written in 1962 expresses concern about 40% of tax dollars going to Washington D.C., it is similar for voters today only now those funds go to the state of Texas through recapture, commonly referred to as Robin Hood.
