Billies battle tough opponents on road trip

The Fredericksburg High School varsity tennis team were able to fine-tune their lineups amid some heavy-hitters and rain during the Hill Country Classic in Mason on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14.

“It was really great for our kids to have to be tested in those environment. I thought we played well across the board. We lost some matches that were high-level tennis,” said Randall King, the head coach.

FHS made two semifinal apperances — one in girls doubles, Samantha Wegner and Cayden Langerhans, and the other in girls singles, Caroline Carnett.

The Billies played less games than expected when the second day of the tournament was rained out. There were no team placements as a result.

The varsity squad placed second in the Puncher Shootout tournament the week prior.

Because the Spring season narrows the number of matches a player can compete in, King asked his players to get practice or game time outside of FHS, before competing in the district tournament in April.

The junior varsity continued to roll. The team won four of the five divisions during a Warrior Invitational on Monday, Feb. 9 in Ingram.

The junior varsity will return to action today at home for the JV Billie Invitational. Varsity will host the Billie Invitational at home on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21.
