Biker hit, leaves scene with culprit

The Gillespie County Sheriff’s Office responded to 356 calls for service during the week of Feb. 2-8. They also handled 175 traffic stops, issued 124 warnings and 32 citations and responded to 13 traffic accidents six major and seven minor. They made 22 arrests for the week and as of Monday, Feb. 9 there were 78 people in the Gillespie County Jail.

Drugs/ Alcohol

On Monday, Feb. 2 at 9:45 p.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on U.S. 290 East. After making contact with the driver, the deputy conducted field sobriety tests. James Schaefer, 35, of Johnson City was arrested for driving while intoxicated third offense or more and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Schaefer consented to a blood draw and was transported to Gillespie County jail.

A deputy conducted a traffic stop on Friday, Feb. 6 at 8:38 p.m. After making contact with the driver and passengers, the deputy located illegal narcotics and unprescribed drugs in the vehicle. The driver, Letoya Gray, 37, was arrested for the possession of dangerous drugs and taken to jail. The passenger was identified as a runaway from Harris County. Sheriff’s department representatives spoke with the juvenile’s father on the phone and were granted permission to release the individual so that she could be returned to a family member’s home. The constable’s office was notified of the incident and indicated that they would follow up.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 4:40 p.m. a deputy responded to reports of a traffic hazard on U.S. 290 East. The deputy spotted a vehicle driving between two lanes westbound on the 6100 block of Main Street. When the deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle drove towards the shoulder of the road and into a ditch repeatedly. The driver was instructed to exit his vehicle by the deputy but refused. After being removed from the vehicle, the deputy assisted him in standing. The driver refused field sobriety tests. Jarred Burns, 28, of Fredericksburg, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and taken to jail. A blood test warrant was granted and executed.

Other

On Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 8:51 p.m. a deputy conducted a traffic stop after running a license plate and discovering the vehicle had had no insurance for 45 days. Sabastian Bichsel, 19, was charged with failure to maintain financial responsibility and transported to jail.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 2:11 a.m., a deputy responded to reports of a rollover vehicle accident between the 3000 and 4000 blocks of Ranch Road 1631. The woman driving fled the scene in the vehicle with a blown-out tire. The deputy stopped the vehicle two miles away on the 2500 block of Ranch Road 1631. Vanessa Hernandez Zepeda, 24, of Fredericksburg was arrested for driving without a license and transported to jail.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 8:29 a.m. a deputy stopped a vehicle on the 4500 block of U.S. 290 East for a wide right turn. Arnold Puente, 55, of Comfort, was arrested for an outstanding local warrant for driving without a license.

On Thursday, Feb. 5 at 5:53 a.m. a deputy a woman at a gas station on the 500 block of East Main Street, and asked dispatch to run her name for warrants. Crystal Stahl, 45, of Mason, was arrested on a warrant out of Blanco County for possession of a controlled substance and taken to jail.

On Sunday, Feb. 8 at 3 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the 9800 block of Texas 16 South after a 911 hangup call. While enroute, deputies were advised that a man ran off with the complainant’s cell phone. Deputies found the man standing in a carport. He was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car after deputies found him to be uncooperative. The complainant told deputies that man in custody wanted to buy illegal substances and punched a door and mirror inside a short-term rental property. Carl Figgins, 32, of Hockley, was arrested for a warrant out of Harris County for continuous violence against the family. He was taken to jail. The short-term rental property owners were contacted and will present the cost of the damage at a later date.

On Sunday, Feb. 8 at 11:03 a.m. a deputy responded to a report of a vehicle versus bike accident near the intersection of U.S. 87 South and Old Comfort Road. The biker left the scene in the vehicle that struck them, before deputies arrived, according to witnesses. Witnesses said the woman driving the vehicle swerved off the road to intentionally hit the individual on the bike. The sheriff located the vehicle ten minutes later on the on the 5500 block of U.S. 87 South. The sheriff saw that the vehicle’s exterior showed markings that corroborated the incident and interviewed both the driver and passenger of the vehicle. Both parties were checked over and cleared by Gillespie County Emergency Medical Services (EMS).  Shellie Tolley, 57, of Fredericksburg was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and transported to county jail.

Detentions

After six traffic stops, deputies made 16 detentions for the U.S Customs and Border Protection agency for the week of Feb. 2-8 and issued 16 ICE Detainers for undocumented individuals, who were picked up at the Gillespie County Jail.

Deputies stopped vehicles:

On Monday, Feb. 2 at 8:07 a.m. on the 12000 block of U.S. 290 East for following behind a vehicle too closely. Raul Tiul Cac, 24, Enrique Ico Cac, 28, Taylor Tennyson Che, 18, Alberto Jonas Si Si, 28, Gendri Isreal Ico Coc, 23, Victor Augusto Tut Choc, 29, Fredy Alejandro Bo Chen, 20 and Byron Tanillo Cip, 18, were found to be undocumented.

On Monday Feb. 2 at 10:41 a.m. on the 1100 block of East Main St. for illegal window tints on a vehicle. Fernando Alfredo Ascencio Quinonez, 22, was found to be undocumented.

On Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 9:23 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 290 East and Split Rail Crossing Road for illegal window tint. During the stop a K9 was deployed and alerted for narcotics. A probable cause search revealed the driver possessed illegal substances. Gilberto Lopez Benitez, 42, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and taken with the passenger Marvin Bladimiro Cano Duenas, 52, to jail where they picked up by ICE.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 8:29 a.m. on the 4500 block of U.S. 290 East for expired registration. Felipe Cruz Cordero Lopez, 27 and Antonio Guillermo Vazquez Yepez, 30, were found to be undocumented and taken to jail.

On Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:46 a.m. on the U.S. 290 in a Stonewall school zone for speeding. Antonio Garcia Rivera, 27, and Josue Danilo Santos Rivera, 32, were found to be undocumented and taken to jail.

On Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2:42 p.m. 400 block of South Washington Street for expired vehicle registration. Laura Janeth Avila-Ascaniuo, 29, was found to be undocumented and taken to jail.
