Girls’ hoops win two straight before Turkey Day, improve to .500

The Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up two victories at home last week before the Thanksgiving break.

FHS (5-5) defeated South San Antonio 68-38 last Monday then Floresville, 60-32, last Tuesday at the FHS Performance Gym.

The Billies collected 57 total team rebounds, 40 offensively, in their 68-38 victory over South San Antonio.

FHS forced 25 turnovers and put 22 points on the scoreboard as a result.

Three Billies scored in double figures, including 24 points from Rilyn Grona.

June Brundrett added 11 points, and Micaella Petty scored 10 points for the Billies.

Brundrett had a doubledouble after collecting 10 rebounds.

Brylee Frantzen ended up with 10 offensive rebounds and one defensive rebound. Frantzen also hit a 3-pointer in the victory.

Madalyn Kovar finished the game with four points, seven rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Grona and Petty led the team in assists with a total of six apiece.

Grona tallied six pass deflections and five steals.

In just eight minutes of play, Sarahi Lozano shot three-for-five from field goal range with a total of six points scored.

Danika Ochoa ended up with four steals and hit one 3-pointer.

Isahia Hinds was the top scorer for South San Antonio with 29 total points.

FHS 60, Floresville 32 The Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball team forced 27 turnovers, which they converted into 22 points during their 60-32 win over Floresville at the FHS Performance Gym last Tuesday.

Micaella Petty drained five 3-pointers and tallied 21 points to lead FHS in scoring.

“In practice, Coach Grona was on to me about continuing to shoot the ball,” Petty said. “The girls on the team are always cheering me on and getting me going, and this game it really showed.”

Rilyn Grona scored 14 points and was the team leader in steals, pass deflections and assists. She added seven assists, six steals, six pass deflections and seven total rebounds.

Madalyn Kovar scored eight points, had six rebounds and two assists. She made four of six free throw attempts.

Brylee Frantzen and Grona tallied three offensive rebounds apiece.

“It feels really good to get this win,” Petty said. “I can’t wait until next week because I feel like Rilyn (Grona) will be on and some of our post players are getting a lot better and starting to learn their cuts.”

Amariah Ruiz led Floresville in scoring with nine points.

The Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball team will have played Georgetown Tuesday night with full results expected in next week’s paper.

The Billies will travel to San Antonio where they will participate in the Northeast ISD/Northside ISD Basketball Tournament Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 4-6 with game times and opponents to be determined.

Next Tuesday, FHS will hit the road to play Medina Valley at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Medina Valley High School.
