Locals scooped up spoon bread in 1948
I’d never heard of spoon bread until I found the recipe in the sixth (1948) edition of the Fredericksburg PTA Cookbook. It was submitted by Mrs. Henry Cordes, the former Emma Crenwelge. Her husband worked rolling — really, crushing — grain at Van der Stucken’s Reliance Roller Mill, which once stood on the site where Bethany Lutheran stands today. I watched that mill go down under the wrecking ball in 1951.
