Although Europeans had been eating chicken for more than 2,400 years, the bird was slow to find its way onto the dinner tables of the English colonies. Chickens crossed the Atlantic with the Pilgrims, but only to provide eggs. They were cheap to keep, surviving on almost anything, but few people thought of them as meat animals.
