Billies deliver first district victory against Canyon Lake

The Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up two wins in the past 10 days, including a 90-21 victory over Canyon Lake to open up district play last Friday at the FHS Performance Gym.

Prior to last Friday’s win, the Billies trounced the Devine Arabians, 62-41, last Tuesday in their final non-district contest of the regular season.

Kirsten Hartmann scored 32 points and Rilyn Grona added 30 points to lead the Billies to a 90-21 victory over Canyon Lake last Friday at the FHS Performance Gym.

“We just really wanted to come out and prove what we have in our district opener,” Rilyn Grona said. “

The Billies jumped out to a 34-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

This was the first district contest of the season for the Billies.

Grona had a triple-double after scoring 30 points and finishing the game with 11 pass deflections and 10 rebounds, not to mention her seven steals and nine assists.

The Billies produced 35 turnovers that led to 49 points on the scoreboard.

Every player on the Billies roster received playing time and picked up stats during this opening district game at home.

Grona and Hartmann led the charge in the first half with Grona hitting two free throws and a 3-pointer to open the game in the first period.

Paige Kuhlmann scored a bucket and was fouled in the process to give the Billies a quick 7-0 lead.
