United Softball 14u wins tournament championship

The Fredericksburg United Softball 14u team won their final tournament of the 2015-16 season on Sunday, defeating Thunderstix FIGHT in the championship with a score of 12-9.

The team played eight games in two days against five different opponents from around Central Texas.

“It’s pretty amazing to watch these small town girls go up against teams that are pulling from much larger cities like San Antonio and Austin,” said Coach Paige Findley.

Ella Weinheimer, Ashyln Weinheimer, Avery Holland and Olivia Findley pitched during the tournament. Combined, the girls earned seven wins and only one loss, with 17 strikeouts in 29 innings and an earned run average of just 2.93 per five innings.

The team did not show strong defense as they posted 20 errors for a fielding percentage of .867.

“In the last two games, when it mattered most, our ladies limited their errors to just one,” said Findley.

Offensively, the team belted out 73 hits in 27 innings, including 10 doubles, five triples and 57 total runs. United averaged .480 at the plate through the eight games.

Madilyn Findley and Kamryn Robinson led the team at .737 and .625 for the weekend, respectively.

In addition to Madilyn Findley’s 14 hits, Ashlyn Weinheimer, Ella Weinheimer and Kamryn Robinson each had 10 of their own.

“I am very proud of these ladies,” said Findley. “They fought through all kinds of adversity during the tournament: difficult calls by umpires, defensive blunders, early-inning deficits and hot triple-digit temperatures. But these comeback kids wouldn’t settle for less than best. They have come a long way from winning just one game in their first tournament last September.”

United Softball 14u completed their season with a 31-24 record.
