Tournament season on deck for FHS girls
BILLIES GIRLS’ HOOPS
Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball team is ready for the tournament season.
Last week the Billies split a pair of games, losing to Burnet, 58-42 and wining against Lampasas, 62-40, making their record 3-3.
The Billies faced Jourdanton Tuesday, Nov. 28 in a late game. Results can be found in the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post Daily Update.
Before the game, head coach Carrie Grona said the game would be a game to control tempo and find the backdoor plays.
“We need to focus on controlling our tempo because they (Jourdanton) are really scrappy and put pressure on top,” she said. “We are going to be looking for those back-door plays because they are so overly aggressive.”
In addition, the game will be an opportunity for a junior varsity player to make the transition to the varsity squad.
“We need some size underneath and there are a few JV players that could fill that spot,” she said. “The spot will be earned if they can get those rebounds that we can’t make now.”
Beginning Thursday, Nov. 30, the Billies will travel to Navarro for a three-day tournament.
The Billies will also face Harper High School at home at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec.
Last week, the Billies defeated Lampasas, 62-40.
“We came off the Burnet game and played well the first quarter-and-a-half and didn’t play well much after that,” Grona said. “They started to show their inexperience and play like freshmen.”
The Billies relied on the help from senior guard Taylor Wilder and junior Geneva Rose.
Freshmen Brooke Batch also got on a roll, which Grona says was good for the young player.
“She got her confidence and really ran the floor well, which is a huge step in the right direction,” she said.
Junior Mia Torres led the team with 22 points followed by Brittley Bowers with
Gracie Zenner, Batch and Caitie Huff led the team in rebounds with five.
Wilder and Bowers each had four steals.

“We are going into this tournament period with some good energy and I am looking forward to see what we can do,” Grona said.
Grona said the tournament will be good opportunity for the team to play a few teams that are better than them and a chance to improve every day.
“We aren’t looking at winloss, we just want to look at what we can do to improve,” she said.
