Three local youth qualify for tourney

Burns, James, Meier earns spots at Optimist national tournament

Three local golfers are heading to a national youth tournament that’s served as a proving ground for some of the sport’s former and current stars.

Mills Meier, Truett Burns and Allison James qualified for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida this summer.

All three golfers finished second in their respective ages groups, with Meier placing in the 16-18 boys’ division with a score of 73, Burns in the 14-15 boys’ division by winning a playoff and James in the 15-18 girls’ division with a score of 73.

Truett plays in the championship tournament July 23-28, and Meier and James play July 28-Aug. 2.
