The Battlin’ Billies swim team is heading to state.

Five swimmers from Fredericksburg High School qualified for the state meet after top finishes in the Region VII-5A meet Feb. 1 in Sugar Land.

Troy Kneese, Tyler Smedley, Zach Willis, Antonio Martinez and Mary Cornett will compete in the UIL Class 5A Swimming and Diving State Meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center in Austin.

“The FHS swim team competed in regionals this past week and did an outstanding job,” coach Kindsey Mahoney said. “The kids broke many school records and five swimmers will be advancing to state.”

Cornett, who qualified in the 50 freestyle, is the school’s first female to compete at state.

Kneese is state bound in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Martinez qualified in the 200 and 500 freestyle.

Kneese, Martinez, Smedley and Willis advanced in the 400 freestyle relay.

This marks the third straight year that FHS sends swimmers to state.

In 2018, Kneese and Martinez were the first to represent the Billies at the state swimming meet.

Last year, Kneese, Martinez, and Willis swam on FHS’ state-qualifying 400 free relay team.
