Rangers draft Tech slugger with area ties

A grandson of an area couple is heading to baseball’s biggest stage.

Texas Tech third baseman Josh Jung, the grandson of Carolyn and Pat Jung of Doss, ended the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft as the No. 8 pick by the Texas Rangers.

The eighth pick has an approximate signing bonus value of $5,176,900.

Jung played high school baseball for San Antonio MacArthur. His father, Jeff Jung, gradfrom Fredericksburg High School in 1984.

He is the Co-All Big 12 Player of the Year and is set to join the Red Raiders in a Super Regionals series against Oklahoma State this weekend.

Jung, who was also a Baseball America second-team All-American in 2019, is batting .340 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Texas Tech advanced to the College World Series last season and won the Big 12 Conference championship this season.
