Longhorns’ slide extends to four

The Longhorns’ post-season prospects took a severe blow Friday night when Harper dropped a 14-7 decision at Brackettville.

With the loss, the Longhorns have fallen to last place in the District 14-2A standings with one game remaining in the regular season.

Other league results from last weekend show that Mason defeated Junction 56-7 to maintain its stranglehold on first place.

In a non-district encounter, Sabinal powered its way to a 44-0 victory over non-district opponent San Antonio Brooks Academy.

Harper will get a chance to finish in the money regarding its playoff chances when the Longhorns entertain Junction this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

A win over the Eagles would create a three-way tie (with Junction and Brackett) in the district’s third place.

If the Longhorns beat Junction on Friday, then in addition to this result, Brackettville would have beaten Harper, Harper would have topped Junction, and Junction would have bested Brackettville.

The coins would then come out for a quick round of decision-making tosses.

Brackettville 14, Harper 7

In a game with playoff indications written all over it, it took more than a quarter’s worth of competition before host Brackettville dented the scoreboard first on its way to a 14-7 win over Harper on Friday.

Camyron Gaulke powered his way through the Harper defense on his way to a 9-yard touchdown run with 10:40 left in the second period.

Ricardo Rivas’ extra-point conversion kick put the Tigers up by a 7-0 margin.

For the game, Gaulke topped all runners with 188 yards gained on 28 carries.

He also scored Brackettville’s second TD of the contest, a 37-yard run with only 1:29 left in the game, to give the Tigers an insurmountable 14-0 advantage.
