Following a successful 2016 season, the Harper Ladyhorns' varsity volleyball team is looking forward to continuing their run for a state title when two-a-day practices bring the team members together for serious business on Aug. 1.

Last year, the Ladyhorns ran the table in District 27-2A play, winning all 10 league contests. In addition, HHS earned its fifth consecutive district championship without suffering a single match loss.

Overall, Harper put together a 20-14 mark in 2016.

However, Lady Luck turned her back on the Ladyhorns as they dropped their bi-district round match to Shiner in three consecutive games.

"We will have three true two-a-days (practices) before our first scrimmage on Aug. 4 in Junction. During the practices) We will be focusing on individual skills, conditioning and personnel decisions."

The next, Harper continues its scrimmage mode when it travels to San Antonio Christian School.

The Ladyhorns officially open the season on Monday, Aug. 7, when they host Johnson City at 6 p.m. Sub-varsity teams from both schools will face-off at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

A 10-game District 27-AA season will begin on Sept. 19 when Harper travels to Medina. The varsity contest starts at 6 p.m., preceded by a junior varsity match at 5 p.m.

HHS head coach Gina Lumpkins mentioned that she welcomes back six players from last year's district championship squad — Mercy Garcia (senior, the district's Newcomer of the Year in 2016), Marti Lumpkins (junior, Co-Setter of the Year in 2016), Keeley Marschall (junior, first team All-District), Logan Menzies (senior, second team All-District), Halli Lovell (junior, second team All-District) and Sophie Payne  (senior).
