Ladyhorns notch pair of victories
The Harper varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of pre-Thanksgiving victories before taking off for the annual holiday.
After handing San Antonio Randolph a 49-21 defeat at home on Monday, Nov. 20, the Ladyhorns, Harper traveled to Johnson City the next night, picking up a 30-24 win in the process.
Harper entertained Leakey yesterday but the outcome wasn’t available prior to this week’s publication deadline.
The Ladyhorns will host their annual tournament that runs Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 in Harper.
Harper 30, Johnson City 24
After squeezing out a 9-8 lead following one quarter, the Ladyhorns expanded their good fortune in the second period by outgunning Johnson City to build up a 17-12 lead at intermission on their way to a 30-24 road win Monday, Nov. 20.
Leading the Ladyhorn attack were Keeley Marschall and Marti Lumpkins, who netted 11 and 10 points, respectively. Lumpkins also sank eight of 16 free throw attempts in the non-district contest.
Top scorers for Johnson City were Trinity Puckett and Jackie Henriquez, who each registered five points.
“(We) led throughout,” said Harper head coach Kade Eckert. “(We) had a great defensive second quarter.”
But, despite the win, the coach knows his team’s holiday lay-off hasn’t been an entirely good thing for the Ladyhorns.
“It was really evident that we have been on Thanksgiving break since Friday afternoon.”
But he also accepted the situation philosophically. “A win is a win.”
