Seven hundred-plus swimmers representing 33 South Texas USAS teams gathered at Palo Alto Community College in San Antonio last weekend for a three-day Junior STAGS Championship meet.

Eleven local swimmers qualified to swim at the championship but only three competed with the aim of advancing to the regional level STAGS.

Coach Alan Carr, Head Coach of HOT reported the official results as follows:

Alice Welder (10) qualified for six events and swam personal ‘Best Times’ in her 100 Back, 50 Breast and 100 Breast.

Maia Fuchs (12) earned an ‘A’ level ‘Best Time’ in her 50 Free of 28.36 seconds. She also swam ‘Best Times’ in the 200 Breast and the 100 Free.

Anna Kate Goodson (13) garnered the eighth place ribbon in the 200 Back and swam personal ‘Best Times’ in the 400 IM (Individual Medley), 50 Free, 100 Back, 100 Free, 200 IM and cut 25 seconds in her 500 Free.

“These girls worked extremely hard all season to reach this level of competition and their work ethic will continue to elevate them as athletes and as young people of ‘high character’,” Carr said. “Exciting races led to some disappointing results in a couple of swims that missed the STAGS cut by only milliseconds”.

The local team is expected to participate in the annual ‘Sombrero Series’ championship meet in San Antonio next month to finish the 2018-2019 short course swimming season.
