Before heading out on Spring Break, the Harper Longhorns’ varsity baseball team picked up an 11-1 home win over Eldorado on March 13. In the bottom of the sixth, when HHS scored its 11th run, the game was ended under the provisions of the 10-run scoring rule.
The 2018 season continued last night when the Longhorns traveled to Menard for a late afternoon contest. The result was not known as of this week’s publication deadline.
Harper hosts Utopia at 6 p.m. Friday on what has been dubbed “Little League Night.”
From there, HHS hits the road again when it goes to Ozona on Monday for another district battle slated for 6 p.m.
Harper 11, Eldorado 1
Tuesday, March 13
Supported by a nine-hit attack, the Longhorns scored in every inning played as they captured an 11-1 district decision over visiting Eldorado on Tuesday, March 13.
Harper plated two runs in each of the first five frames, then added an insurance run in the last of the sixth frame to give HHS a 10-run advantage, good enough to stop the game there under the scoring rule.
Kelton Marek was the leading hitter for the Longhorns as he reached with four safeties during his four at-bats. He scored three times while knocking in other runs. Marek also reached on a walk.
Harper’s starting pitcher, Weston Clark, lasted five innings on the mound to earn the victory before giving way to reliever Layne Holmes in the sixth frame.
Clark gave up one hit, a run, and a pair of base-on-balls whiles striking out 10.
Following Harper’s two-spot in the bottom half of the opening frame, the Eagles scored their only run of the game when Eric Reyes managed to cross the plate in the top of the second.
For the game, the Longhorns committed only one error while Eldorado hurt its own cause with five miscues.
