FHS tennis sets eyes on state

Fredericksburg High School team tennis punched its ticket to the UIL Class 4A State Team Tennis Tournament.
The Billies beat Boerne, 10-6, in the Region IV-4A finals on Friday, Oct. 26, and Zapata in the regional semifinals Thursday, Oct. 25, to for the team’s second straight trip to state, starting today, Oct. 31, and ending tomorrow, Nov. 1, at the George A. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.

It is FHS’ fourth state tournament trip in five years.

Last years’ experience gave the Billies an advantage heading into the tournament.
FHS won its semifinals match against Wills Point and lost to the state powerhouse Abilene Wylie in the 2017 championship and lost, 10-0.
“I think this group will be a little more comfortable on the big stage this fall,” coach Randall King said. “They handled it very well last year in reaching the finals to play Wylie. We played a very tough schedule early on to help us finish strong at the end of the year. We played two of the teams that qualified for state in 5A this fall season (Abilene Wylie and College Station A&M Consolidated). They were great matchups for our kids. It helps them become tougher on the court.”

Regional success
FHS and Boerne once again met in the regional finals.
For a second straight season, the Billies won the Region IV championship against one of their biggest rivals.
“We always know that Boerne is one of the best teams in the state, year in and year out,” King said. “They present a major hurdle in district and regionals. I think it helps our toughness playing them before state. It is a big-time playoff match for both teams.”

FHS and Boerne have combined for the last five Region IV titles and annually compete with each other for district championships.
King said that the group, which started the season 1-4, continues to improve week to week.
“It was a great match against Boerne,” King said. “We always know that getting through Region IV will be very tough. It is clear that hurdle and qualify for the state tourney.”
The Billies also beat the Zapata Hawks in the regional semifinals.
Heading to state
This year’s state tournament brings a host of unknowns to the table.
The Billies start state with a semifinals match against Lamar Fulshear today.
A win sends FHS to a championship showdown with either Midlothian Heritage or Canyon.
FHS hasn’t faced any of the three teams in previous matches.
“We have no history with any of the other teams,” King said. “Two of the teams are newer high schools that are less than three years old. Canyon has dropped down from 5A, and they have a very tradition rich tennis program.”
