Fredericksburg High School’s swim team continues another successful season with state meet bids.
Tony Martinez, Troy Kneese, Graham Hammond and Tyler Smedley are heading to the UIL Class 5A Swimming and Diving Meet, set for Feb. 15-16 at the University of Texas in Austin, after qualifying during the Region VII-5A meet on Friday and Saturday in Sugar Land.
Martinez (200- and 500-yard freestyle) and Kneese (50 freestyle and 100 backstroke) qualified in individual events for a second straight year.
FHS’ 400 free team of Hammond, Kneese, Smedley and Martinez give the school its first relay entry in a state meet.
“We could not be more proud of the way our athletes prepared and performed at the regional meet,” coach Mike Myers said. “They went to this meet with the intent of setting personal best times and advancing to the state meet … one of our goals this year was to send relay teams to the state meet, and it is so exciting to see these athletes perform at this level.”
“All of our swimmers gave their best efforts and set many personal and school records while competing against some of the fastest swimmers in Texas in Class 5A,” Myers said.
Mary Cornett advanced to the finals and set school records in both the 50 and 100 free.
The regional meet also served as the final high school competition for seniors Will Shepard and Katya Walker.
