FHS football faces rival Boerne in 14-4A DI opener Friday night
It’s not about the other team. It’s all about what the Battlin’ Billies can do this week.
At least that’s the mantra for Fredericksburg High School’s varsity football team this week, with its District 14-4A DI opener coming versus a familiar rival on a roll: the Boerne High Greyhounds.
The matchup features the district’s top two teams in offense and defense through six games in Boerne (first in total defense and second in total offense) and FHS (first in total offense and second in total defense).
FHS head coach Lance Moffett and company aren’t worried about playing a local rival that’s steamrolled through its non-district schedule and currently sits No. 6 in the Padilla Poll’s Class 4A-DI rankings.
The Billies have their eyes set on winning the week by playing their game.
“I told them (Monday) morning that we’re not going to talk about this rivalry thing,” Moffett said. “Every time we play Boerne in any sport, it’s a heated affair. I think you speak to the leadership of our team and what those guys want to accomplish this year, and I think they understand that it’s not about Boerne, Wimberley, Canyon Lake … it’s not about them. It’s about us.
“If we can be the best possible individual football player that I can be in practice, then we’re going to have a chance to win on Friday.”
That’s not to say FHS is taking the game lightly.
Boerne comes into Friday’s game with a 6-0 record that includes wins against preseason Top 25 teams like Somerset and Wimberley.
