The Billies’ season ended after 100 minutes of close play Friday night.
Fredericksburg High School boys’ soccer lost to the Gonzales Apaches, 2-1, in the Class 4A-Region IV area round of the playoffs Friday in Wimberley.
The two-week break between Fredericksburg’s final two games of the season made it hard for Fredericksburg to establish a rhythm on the attack in the game.
“The two-week layoff was worse than I thought it would be,” coach Shannon Petsch said. “Our timing was off, our shots were off and it was hard to get any continuity.”
Forwards Tristan Sanchez and Jesus Aguilar worked together on a counter attack to put the Billies on the board during the game’s second minute for a 1-0 lead.
Gonzales kept the ball on Fredericksburg’s side of the field after the score and tied the game eight minutes later.
The score remained tied after 80 minutes of regulation time to send the game into the 20-minute overtime period.
Gonzales scored early in the first half of overtime, hitting a ball just out of the reach of goalkeeper Jose de los Reyes de la Fuente and giving the Apaches an edge they held until the end.
“Kids played with a lot of heart and energy,” Petsch said. “It was especially hard to see them go out this way, but that is the nature of the game and we had to play the hand we were dealt. All we can do now is start working for next year.”
Fredericksburg ends its season with a 14-6-2 record, including a 6-1-1 mark and a share of the District 28-4A title.
The Billies lose a strong corps of seniors that have contributed to the team’s three straight playoff seasons in Class 4A play.
“It is going to be hard losing seniors Ian Kendrick, Jesus Aguilar, Jesus Dominguez, Martin Sanchez and Rigo Rodriguez, but I am sure someone will come up and try to fill their shoes,” Petsch said.
