Eagles win district opener
After trading touchdowns and leads in the last four minutes of the first period, Heritage finally took control with three Jonathan Hoermann second quarter rushing scores in the Eagles’ 58-28 win over host Faith Academy, 58-28, in six-man football action Friday.
Hoermann, who was the game’s leading ground-gainer with 223 yards on 20 carries, scored five tallies, including the first one of the contest with 3:16 remaining in the opening stanza.
Less than a minute later, however, the Cougars responded with a 62-yard pass play from Duece Graham to Julio Clausen that ended in a touchdown. Tyler Torres successfully connected on the point-after kick to put Victoria Faith up by a slim 8-6.
Hoermann also threw a trio of TD passes in the game during his 5-of-6 aerial performance on the night for a total of 90 yards.
With the win, Heritage is now tied with Bulverde Bracken Christian School at the top of the Division II District 5 standings at 1-0. Bracken also opened league Friday night with an 86-0 thumping of Spring Branch Living Rock.
Heritage hosts Bracken this Friday evening on Eagle Field in what could easily have district championship and playoff seeding implications. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The regular season comes to an end for the four-team league Nov. 10 when Living Rock visits Heritage and Bracken tangles with Victoria Faith. Both of these contests start at 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles remain in fourth place in the TAPPS Division II 1A poll as determined by sixmanfootball.com.
Heritage 58, Victoria Faith Academy 28
Although nobody scored until late in the first period, both schools combined for five touchdowns and 38 points by the time the second quarter rolled around. By that time, Heritage found itself on top, 22-16, thanks to a True Stephens reception of a Hoermann 24-yard pass with no time left in the opening period.
In the see-saw contest, the Eagles retook the lead 14-8 a minute later when Hoermann fired an aerial to Lane Sawtelle on a pass play that covered 11 yards. Josh Hoermann’s two-point conversion kick was successful.
But Victoria Faith wasted little time in battling back ahead when Tanner Moore carried the 60 yards downfield for another go-ahead score for the hosts. Torres connected on the PAT to put the Cougars back up, 16-14.
The Eagles, however, regained the advantage for good when Stephens caught a Jonathan Hoermann 24-yard touchdown pass at the opening period’s buzzer. The tally put Heritage up 22-16, giving the Eagles a lead it would never relinquish for the rest of the game.
