Heritage’s district opener followed the same theme as the team’s other games: dominance.

The Eagles only needed one half of football to beat Sam Marcos Hill Country Christian, 46-0, during their TAPPS District 3-DIII game on Friday, Oct. 11, in San Marcos.

“This could easily have been a trap game,” coach Tim Shipman said. “San Marcos is a good football team with a great coaching staff. We were on the road and every year San Marcos plays us very tough. The test was how focused could we be and disciplined could we be in that situation.”

Senior Noah Given contributed on Heritage’s first four touchdowns of the game and ended with 144 total yards of offense.

Junior Josh Hoermann threw, ran and caught TDs during the game, and gained 159 yards of offense.

John Fritzsch, a sophomore, ran for 54 yards and a score.

Sophomore Caden Bray caught a 38-yard touchdown pass.

The scoring started with Hoermann’s 44-yard TD strike to Given on Heritage’s first drive of the game.

The duo reversed roles on Heritage’s next drive, with Given completing a 36-yard pass to Hoermann to make it 16-0.

Given followed that with a four-yard touchdown run to end the first quarter with a 24-0 lead in Heritage’s favor.

The Eagles scored three more times during the second quarter to end the game via the mercy rule at halftime.

“We played as solid of a game as we have played all year,” Shipman said. “Defense wins championships and we played very disciplined, downhill, smart defense.

“Offensively, we are starting to click and get a lot better at our execution. The chemistry is a good as a coach would want at this time of year.”

Next up is a non-district game against San Antonio Brooks at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in San Antonio.

“This will be a quick turnaround for us simply because the game is on Thursday instead of Friday,” Shipman said. “This is an important tune-up game before we get a bye week. It will be important for us to take care of business here.”
