Billies win region title, state up next

Battlin’ Billies team tennis is two matches away from gold.

Fredericksburg High School qualified for its third University Interscholastic League Class 4A State Team Tennis Tournament in College Station after wins against Zapata and Boerne in the Region IV-Class 4A tournament last week in San Antonio.

FHS plays in the state semifinals against Wills Point today, Wednesday, Nov. 1, at College Station, with a chance to play in the championship match on Thursday, Nov. 2.

The Billies beat the Zapata Hawks, 10-0, in the regional semifinals Thursday and took out Boerne, 10-7, in the regional final Friday to win its third regional championship in team tennis since 2014.

FHS collected regional titles in 2014 and 2015.

“We are proud to be representing Fredericksburg and Region IV-4A at the state tourney,” coach Randall King said. “It has been a work in progress this season.  The kids know the expectations and the work it takes to achieve this level.

“The bar has been set high for the last 10 years, and each year, the kids put in the hard miles to get there.”

First up is a match against Willis Point in the state semifinals today, Wednesday.

“We played Wills Point three years ago in the first round at state,” King said. “They are well coached and will be a formidable opponent.”

Abilene Wylie and Waco Robinson face off on the other side of the bracket.

Wylie has won two state championships in three years and were runners-up in 2015, when the Billies won state.

Robinson makes its first appearance in a team tennis state tournament.

“Abilene Wylie is the defending state champion and probably as good or better than last year,” King said. “We have never played Waco Robinson, but they have two of the top boys in the state in Class 4A tennis on their squad.”

Wednesday’s semifinal matches start at 8 a.m.

The state championship match is set for 8 a.m. Thursday.

All matches are played at the George P. Mitchell Tennis and Omar Smith Intramural Tennis Centers in College Station.
