Billies ready for championship drive

FHS girls wrap up district title run, blow out Lampasas in bi-district

Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball will advance to the area round after defeating the Lampasas Badgers Monday night, 78-33, in bi-district at the Burger Center in Austin.

The Billies, who were District 28-4A champions, will next compete against El Campo or Smithville, following the results of two teams’ bi-district game late Tuesday.

The Lampasas Badgers, who were 25-11 and 4-6 in District 27-4A, were no match for the Billies tough defense.

After the Badgers led the start of the game, FHS regained control and never looked back.

“We came out tight and just needed to relax and let the game come to us,” head coach Carrie Grona said. “We were trying to force the game. We needed to play our game, play good defense and move the ball until either a post came open or a guard on the outside.”

Almost every lay-up made by the Billies resulted in a foul.

Audrey Spurgin scored 13 of her 19 points at the freethrow line.

“They don’t play defense well and they get frustrated pretty easily,” Grona said. “We just needed to make them pay for that by making free throws.”

Throughout the season, Grona has complimented her team for being well-rounded across the bench. Last night, every player on the Billies roster stepped foot on the court.

“I hope this makes us harder to scout, harder to prepare for with any type of simple adjustment,” she said.

FHS was leading scoring by Spurgin with 19, junior Brittley Bowers with 15, freshman Ella Hartmann with 13 and junior Anna Gold with 12.

As the Billies look ahead, the team will be focused on sharpening offensive and defensive schemes.
