Billies hoops ends season in third round

Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ basketball’s season came to a halt Friday night.

The Billies lost to Freeport Brazosport, 75-40, in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals on Friday in Victoria to cut their season one round short of making the Region IV-4A tournament.

“Losing your last game is always disappointing, but there is no way I will allow this loss to dampen the wonderful season that these young men had this year,” coach Tim Kaman said. “After graduating nine of our top 10 players from last year, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year, but these guys continued to work all year and become a pretty good year.

“Our community and school should be proud of these guys as well. 25-10 with a bi-district and area championship to their name. Not a bad way to go out.”

FHS ends its season with a 25-10 record, 6-2 in District 28-4A.

The Billies stuck close to the Exporters during the first, but a 21-8 second quarter proved too much to overcome.

“We came out and had a very good quarter, only trailing by three, but I sensed we were in trouble when we did not hit some easy shots early in the quarter,” Kaman said. “We actually could have been leading after one, but the shots did not fall.”

FHS controlled the tempo early in the game, but missed shots led to fast break points for Brazosport.

A quick lead change led to a sense of urgency that didn’t help FHS establish an offensive rhythm.

“We got a little frustrated and then got into a hurry,” Kaman said. “Getting in a hurry led to bad shot selection and turnovers. That is what hurt us the most. We turned it over around their basket, so they were able to get layups.”

Brazosport led FHS by 16 at halftime and by 24 heading into the game’s final quarter.

Sean Majors closed out his high school career by leading the Billies with 13 points. JT Watson scored 12 and Ryan Davis added six.
