The Battlin’ Billies couldn’t bat their way past the semifinals.
Fredericksburg High School softball lost to the Huffman Hargrave Falcons, 4-0, during the UIL Class 4A State Semifinals on Thursday at Red and Charlene McCombs Softball Field in Austin.
FHS managed two hits through seven innings and struck out in 15 of the team’s 22 plate appearances against Falcons junior Katy Janes.
Hargrave senior Dez Cardenas drew a leadoff walk during the bottom of the first inning and scored on the next at-bat after an FHS throwing error to first base to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons scored twice during the third and drove in another during the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0.
Janes and Hargrave’s defense held FHS hitless through five innings when the Billies recorded their first hit on junior Grace Duecker’s bunt. Sophomore Ashley Dressen followed with an attempted sacrifice bunt that ended in a 3-6 double play during the sixth.
The Billies’ next hit came with the team down to its final out. Sophomore Ashlyn Weinheimer fought a 1-2 count to drive the ball through a gap in the infield to reach first.
However, the would-be FHS rally wasn’t meant to be. Janis fanned the next batter to record strikeout No. 15 to end the ballgame and advance to the Class 4A final.
The Billies end the season 35-10 after winning the District 28-4A and Region IV-4A championships this season.
FHS also made their first state softball tournament appearance during coach Melissa Hall’s second season leading the program.
Hargrave will face Anna for the 4A championship on Saturday. Anna won a semifinal game against Decatur, 6-4, prior to the FHS-Hargrave game.
