Billies beat Texans in regional quarters baseball action
The Battlin’ Billies inched closer to the Region IV-4A peak Friday night.
A three-run rally during the fifth inning helped Fredericksburg High School baseball beat Wimberley, 6-2, in the IV-4A regional quarterfinals Friday at St. Mary’s University.
“It was great for our kids,” coach Derrick Dietrich said. “They have worked their tails off all year to get us in this position. (FHS’ 3-2 loss to Wimberley) early in the year, in hindsight, was a good thing. We knew we had to work every day to beat the real good teams once the playoffs came around. It was a great win for our program.”
The teams were tied heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Billies scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Riggs Threadgill drove in Hobbs Price on an RBI double to take the lead, and Dax Dietrich hit a two-run single with two outs to help give FHS a four-run cushion.
FHS (26-6, 11-1) scored one more in the sixth and held Wimberley off the board for the final two innings of the game.
Dietrich said strong pitching from the Billies’ pair of aces and well-time hits were key to winning the round.
“The two-strike, two-out, two-RBI base hit by Dax in the fifth inning was huge for us,” Dietrich said. “At the time, we had a narrow 3-2 lead. That gave us the boost we needed and kind of let the air out of (Wimberley’s) sails.
