Billies baseball wins Game 1 of regional finals with walk-off hit
The Billies are a win away from a state trip.
All it took was a couple of hits and a little bit of luck.
Senior first baseman Will Flannery drove in junior center fielder Hobbs Price during the bottom of the seventh inning to give Fredericksburg High School the 1-0 win against the Sweeny Bulldogs in Game 1 of the Region IV-4A championship series Wednesday night in San Antonio.
Price and senior pitcher Riggs Threadgill posted back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second for third baseman Don Flannery. Don Flannery bunted down the third base line to advance put both runners in scoring position and safely reach first to load the bases.
Will Flannery came up to the plate nexted and popped up to left field, but Sweeny’s defense misplayed the hit, allowing Price to run down the third-base line to reach home and earn FHS the 1-0 series lead heading into Thursday’s game.
Threadgill shut out the Bulldogs in seven innings pitched, coming up with defensive stops and runners in scoring position during the fifth and sixth innings, to earn the win. The LSU-bound senior struck out four batters, gave up three hits and walked one.
Senior shortstop TJ Tomlinson broke up Sweeny pitcher Caden Homniok's no hitter with a single in the sixth inning. Tomlinson also lead off the game with a walk, which would be FHS' only base runner until the sixth inning.
The series resumes with Game 2, starting at 5 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Park in Victoria. Game 3, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after Game 2. The winner advances to the UIL Class 4A Baseball State Tournament, set for June 6-7 at Disch-Falk Field, located on the University of Texas campus in Austin.
