‘Win the change’

FHS Battlin’ Billies football teams adopting new motto as first practices start on Monday

Change is in the air at Fredericksburg High School — so much so, that Lance Moffett, athletic director, has adopted the mantra “Win the change!”
“Everything we do is changing. We have our new uniforms. That’s a change. We’ve got a new scoreboard. That’s a change. We’re getting a new press box. That’s a change. We’re getting a new academic schedule on campus. That’s a change. Our whole campus is under construction. That’s a change,” Moffett said. “And, the way we’re practicing is going to change.”
That’ll be apparent Monday, Aug. 1, when gridiron players reunite with the turf at FHS Stadium.
Limited to three hours of practice by the University Interscholastic League, players will arrive at 6:45 a.m.
At 7 a.m., the first half hour will be dedicated to meetings on logistics, going through rules, and other business before the three-hour practice drills from 7:30-10:30 a.m.
Capping their time on the field will be another half hour of meetings, watching films and the like.
The squad will stick to morning-only practices for about a week and a half before switching to evening sessions on Aug. 10 to allow for the coaches to be engaged in teacher in-service sessions earlier in the days.
Practice will be light on Aug. 11, since the Billies will have their first scrimmage starting at about 5 p.m. the following day, Friday, Aug. 12, at Jourdanton.
That initial outing will be a three-way contest with Jourdanton and Bandera, giving coaches a chance to see more players’ reactions on both sides of the ball.
In a departure from the past, the squad’s second scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 18, will also be a night-time exercise, starting with sub-varsity at 5:30 p.m. at Lago Vista.
After school starts Aug. 22, the way the teams practice will also change.
