Software to detect short-term rentals

The City of Fredericksburg has expressed a need to purchase software to assist in identifying properties that are involved in short-term rentals (STRs).

After the city has received complaints regarding STRs, the council decided to move in a direction to keep track of STRs and enforce regulations.

“One of the steps will be a creation of a new short-term rental ordinance,” Myers said. “That ordinance is currently being drafted by our city attorney and we are hoping to have it on for the next city council meeting for your consideration. It will include how we’re going to register short-term rentals, fire code, annual inspections and so forth.”

Additionally, the ordinance will outline required registration fees for STRs.

The city plans to begin collecting the fees starting on Jan. 1, 2018. Plans also include having a code enforcement officer handle STR inspections and regulations.

About a third of STRs in the city are not registered, Myers said, and HOT funds (Hotel Occupancy Tax) are not being collected from many of them.

The city moved to approve to enter into an agreement with STR Helper for a cost nearing $22,000.

Heritage Center lease

Joe Davis, former president of the Former Texas Rangers Foundation asked the council for a 10 year lease extension for the Texas Rangers Heritage Center.

Phase I has been completed, and the center will need additional time to complete Phase II.

Phase II will be a state-of-the-art facility where visitors may learn about the history of the Texas Rangers’ role and the state of Texas. Volunteers are currently working to send out letters to garner more donations to help make Phase II a reality.
