June Jonathan Ramsay
June Jonathan Ramsay
June 8, 1920 - June 19, 2016
June Jonathan Ramsay went to be with the Lord, June 19, 2016. She died peacefully at home surrounded by family.
June was born in Minneota, Minnesota June 8, 1920. She married H. Murray Ramsay on July 3, 1943. She attended University of Michigan, then graduated from Ferris Institute in 1954 with a degree in Pharmacy while raising 2 small children and pregnant with a third. She and her husband owned Ramsay Brothers Pharmacy in Whitmore Lake, Michigan for many years where they enjoyed water skiing sports with their children. June was an accomplished bridge player and also acted in the local dramatic theatre.
In 1963, the family moved to Sarasota, Florida where she continued her work as a pharmacist until retiring in 1983. Duplicate bridge playing continued as well as volunteering at the local botanical garden. June particularly enjoyed entertaining at their home on the Intercoastal Waterway and walking every morning with her friends. After retirement, she and Murray became avid ballroom dancers with weekly lessons, dance cruises, and even competing in regional dance contests.
After the untimely death of her husband, she moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, full time in 1994. She then began her 20-year service in the Hill Country Memorial Auxiliary, accumulating over 9,000 volunteer hours. Her volunteerism also extended to the Heritage School where she assisted in reading and art projects. There, she also became a devoted supporter of her grandchildren’s athletic and other extracurricular pursuits. Her apple pie making was renowned and in high demand for fundraising dessert auctions. Finding Bridge partners became harder and harder so her card playing switched to Cribbage which she taught her grandchildren and their spouses. Remarkably, she was able to play until the last few days of her life. One of her best Cribbage hands was her last. Her greatest passions, however, were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She fiercely supported them all and diligently tracked their progress on Facebook, even at the age of 95.
June grew up Lutheran and raised her children Presbyterian (one grandchild, Jonathan, is now a Presbyterian minister). Over the last 20 years she rarely missed attending Hill Country Church where she was quietly, but firmly, devoted to the Lord.
June was preceded in death by her husband in 1989 and her Icelandic parents, Johann and Jorun Sigertson Jonathan. She was the last living of their 18 children. She had a blessed life.
She is survived by her daughter, Jorun Kay Jones of Boston, Massachusetts; son, Allan Ramsay and wife, Ann of Burlington, Vermont, and son, John Ramsay and wife, Suzanne of Fredericksburg, Texas. Her eleven grandchildren and spouses are Murray Jones, Marya Jones, Sarah and Adam Chmielewski, Erin Ramsay, Adam Ramsay, Andrea Ramsay, Jonathan Ramsay, Katie and Jacob Rhodes, Scott and Jordan Ramsay, Robert Ramsay, and Lily Ramsay. Great-grandchildren are Jacob Ramsay Rhodes, Lucy June Rhodes, Roman John Rhodes, Forest June Ramsay, Josie Chmielewski, and Tyler Chmielewski.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Hill Country Church with the Rev. John Hierholzer officiating.
Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation was held Tuesday evening, June 21.
