Frederick Gordon Barnes, 87, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019.

Barnes was born April 12, 1932, in Bermuda, and received his weather and flight training from Pan American World Airlines.

After spending 11 years with Pan Am, Barnes became a television/radio meteorologist with CBS in New York and WUSA-TV in Washington, DC.

During his career, he was the only professional meteorologist to work with Walter Cronkite and was part of the CBS Apollo Mission television team.

Barnes also had the distinction of flying in a hurricane hunter aircraft in Hurricane Andrew.

He introduced the jet stream to television viewers and the wind chill factor to the entire broadcasting industry.
