Billies tennis starts with home tournament
Fredericksburg High School varsity team tennis started its season with a home tournament.
The Battlin’ Billies won one of three completed matches in the FHS/Tivy Team Tennis Tournament on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 9-10, in locations around Fredericksburg and Kerrville.
FHS faced Class 6A and 5A competition in its season opener, which tested the Billies in their first fall match play.
“It was a great experience,” coach Randall King said. “We have never opened the season with such close matches. That level of competition to start the season in a tournament format will pay dividends at the end of the fall season.”
FHS won its opening match against Midland High, 10-9, but lost subsequent matches against Dripping Springs, 10-9, and College Station A&M Consolidated, 10-9.
“We have never been a team to shy away from good competition,” King said. “Playing this level of tennis really helps the team to get better. We work harder in practice to be able to compete with the higher-level teams. There are so many benefits from playing tougher teams early in the season.”
