Water supply, drought eyed at city meeting

Recent showers help, but area remains more than 6 inches below average rainfall

Before last weekend’s showers, the city had seen just 10 inches of rain and was about six inches below its average rainfall.

A presentation and discussion of this and other water supply issues was held at last Monday’s Fredericksburg City Council meeting.

Assistant City Manager Clinton Bailey was joined by Hill Country Underground Water Conservation District Manager Paul Tybor to discuss the status of Fredericksburg’s water supply.

The city has seen just under 10 inches of rain this year and is about six inches below the average of 16.59 inches for this time of year.

“This time in 2011, as a comparison, we were at 4.76 inches of rain. The total for that year was 12.63 inches,” Bailey said.

The Local Drought Index holds the following ratings:

-1 Stage 1 — Mild

-2 Stage 2 — Moderate

-3 Stage 3 — Severe

-4 Stage 4 — Critical

-5 Stage 5 — Emergency

Though the city saw showers last weekend, Fredericksburg sits at a current Local Drought Index (LDI) of -3.2, which is Stage 3 and considered severe.

“The recent cooler weather and local rainfall helps lessen the demand for water and over the past several days, we have seen a positive rebound in the city’s well levels,” Bailey said. “The three-week forecast shows high temperatures in the low 90s which is significantly lower than the past 30 days. Barring an equipment breakdown, if the cooler weather continues, we will likely not move into a more restrictive watering stage this year.”

Despite experiencing drought conditions, city officials do not plan to raise the water restrictions from Stage 3 to Stage 4.
